we'll show you stephen's rant coming up later in the show. first to the news right here at 30 rock in new york city and we begin with a looming showdown over the so-called fiscal cliff. the white house is showing its cards and sending a message ahead of the president's face-to-face meeting with republican congressional leaders. it'll take place on friday. president obama plans to open negotiations by calling for $1.6 trillion in additional tax revenue over the next decade. that amount is likely far more than republicans would be willing to accept and double the amount that speaker boehner had offered the president during their debt negotiations last year. today, the president is scheduled to meet with ceos from a dozen companies among them general electric, ford and ibm. they'll discuss ways to work together and try to find a balanced approach to reducing the deficit. during a closed door meeting yesterday with union leaders and liberal supporters, president obama reportedly vowed that he

would "not budge" when it comes to letting the bush tax cuts expire for the country's highest earners. labor leader and president of the afl-cio was among those at the white house meeting and says he and the president are right now on the same page, richard trumka. >> we're working to make sure we're not paying a tab for a party we didn't go to. the president led with the notion of protecting the middle class and now you have republicans that have it in their power and could sign a bill tomorrow that protects the middle class so we'll see what they can. are we going to push them on that? without a doubt we're going to push on them. are we going to collectively stand up and make sure that workers get a fair shake in all of this? absolutely, we are. do we believe that the president is committed to that same thing? absolutely, we do. >> by the way, tune in to msnbc today at 1:30 p.m. for live

coverage of the president's press conference. again, at 1:30 today. congressman paul ryan is dismissing suggestions that president obama's victory gives his administration a mandate to raise taxes on the rich. returning to capitol hill yesterday for the first time since the election loss, paul ryan pointed to the republicans keeping control of the house as a sign that the country isn't yet sold on the democrats' agenda. >> whether people intended or not we've got divided government. >> you don't think there's a mandate here? >> i don't because then they would have put nancy pelosi in charge of the house of representatives. these idea s we've talked about i think they're popular ideas. this was a close election and unfortunately, divided government didn't work well the last to years. we have to make sure it works the next two years. both parties have to talk to each other. >> reporter: can you see yourself supporting a plan for raising tax rates. >> rhyme not for tax hikes. i do not support raising tax

rate, period. i've been saying that my entire career. >> note to house republicans, the p-90 x classes begin again this morning. there is little confidence among the public that the two sides can find a compromise. look at this. only 38% believe the president and house republicans will reach an agreement. and if there isn't a deal by the end of the year, over 50% say republicans in congress will be the ones to blame. 29% say it will rest on president obama's shoulders. now, the latest on that increasingly complex scandal involving a pair of high-profile and highly decorated four-star generals. here's the latest. this morning president obama is scheduled to hold his first post-election news conference. he is expected to face a barrage of questions about general david petraeus' admitted affair, the time line of the fbi investigation and when exactly the president was told about it. meanwhile, the white house says the president still has faith in

general john allen. he, of course, is the current u.s. commander in afghanistan who is now under investigation by the pentagon's inspector general for what officials described as potentially inappropriate e-mails with one of the women directly involved in the case. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell has more on this ever-widening story. >> reporter: the scandal involving two very different women, tampa socialite jill kelley and petraeus biographer paul broadwell ensnared not only petraeus but his successor. john allen who took over from petraeus in afghanistan and is the president's choice to be supreme allied commander of nato forces in europe, a nomination now temporarily on hold. >> sweetheart, thank you for all that you have done for me and for our precious -- >> reporter: the general is married with a sterling record but on a flight to australia monday night aides to defense secretary leon panetta said there was a dramatic turn in the

case. fbi investigators uncovered potentially inappropriate communications between the general and jill kelley, whom he and his wife got to know in tampa. and were reviewing between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of documents including e-mails over two years. officials say some were flirtatious, but the general strongly denies an improperly relationship. the fbi discovered them during its investigation of kelley's e-mails sparked by her complaints about anonymous threats which turned out to be from paul broadwell and found no wrongdoing by general allen but turned the files over to the pentagon which monday ordered its inspector general to investigate. a social link between the two four-star generals, jill kelley, who enjoyed socializing with the powerful in tampa while doing volunteer work for military families. she also gave people the impression she had some kind of state department status which officials say she does not. in fact, last weekend she called police complaining about media visitors including nbc. at one point invoking diplomatic

type privileges. >> i am an honorary consul-general so i have inviolaability. i don't know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved, as well. >> reporter: in september both wrote letters to the court handling kelley's twin sister's bitter child custody case to vouch for the si ter. another friend of kelley's, the fbi agent who launched the investigation that eventually forced petraeus to resign. he is now the subject of an ethics inquiry after the fbi found he had sent kelley pictures with his shirt off. months before the fbi was brought on to the case. >> that was nbc's andrea mitchell reporting. some lawmakers are demanding that general petraeus testify at some point about the deadly attack at the u.s. consulate in benghazi which he independently investigated. incumbent senator scott brown of massachusetts who lost to elizabeth warren is calling on his republican party to move to the middle.

>> we need to be a larger party. i'm a pro-choice moderate republican, there's a vanishing breed. you know that now. you've lost joe lieberman, richard lugar, kent conrad, me, olympia snowe. that group in the middle, it's vanishing and there are on both sides there are extremes as you all know kind of pushing back against the middle. i've always felt that that group in the middle is, quite frankly, the most powerful group because they're able to get to that 60-vote fleshhold and get things done so i'm hopeful we'll be a more tolerant, you know, open-minded party. >> there is speculation that brown could make another run for national if president obama names senator john kerry to his cabinet as a possible secretary of state or perhaps defense secretary. senator brown is also rumored to be a contender for massachusetts governor in 2014 but he insists his immediate future is focused

outside of politics. >> my job is to make sure there is a smooth transition. there is not an opener for governor nor is there an opener for senator but there is an opening for a dad and a husband and that's the role that i want to play. >> by the way, senator brown added that his democratic colleague, john kerry, would make and to use his words, a "excellent secretary of state." we'll keep you posted. this morning nearly 9,000 homes or businesses in new york remain without power. it's now two weeks after sandy came ashore. yesterday the head of the long island power authority announced his resignation effective at the end of the year. he says it has nothing to do with the harsh criticism his utility company has received following hurricane sandy. of course, not. governor andrew cuomo is putting together a commission to investigate how utility companies in new york responded to the storm. meanwhile, a familiar group is taking a new lead helping victims of hurricane sandy. remember the occupy wall street movement? it turns out they never really

went away as nbc's katy tur explains. >> reporter: there are no official badges. all they have for identification is a first name crippled on tom masking tape. these volunteers may not have a legal charity status, but that's not stopping them. >> they desperately need our help. they lost everything. >> tax the rich. >> reporter: remember the occupy wall street movement famous for taking over zuccotti park and taking up the term 1%. now they have occupy sandy. occupy went to work and while fema temporarily shut its doors during last week's nor'easter, due to bad weather, occupy never did. more than two weeks after the storm, thousands of people volunteer daily. sash that brown is just one of them. he helps pack up supplies and deliver them to people in need. >> i'm just another new yorker helping out other new yorkers. >> reporter: his band finished touring so borrowed the van and showed up here.

you pay for the gas? >> i am. the band is. i don't know but they're dough mating it. >> reporter: although the occupy movement has no leadership, they have set up a hyper-organized system for this. three main hubs each with a command center, medic dispatch and car dispatched to organize drivers. there's a phone bank, kitchens that provide two hot meals a day and no shortage of helpers. they use twitter and facebook to match donations to needs and u.p.s. to deliver supplies that have been picked out carefully. >> wonderful. thank you. >> reporter: with $400,000 in the bank and next to no overhead, nearly all the money can go straight to relief efforts. for all of small, every little bit helps. >> trying to help people to survive. >> reporter: no bureaucracy and the occupy volunteers say that means no problem. >> that was nbc's katy tur reporting. today is a crucial test on wall street for the social networking giant facebook. more than 750 million shares of the facebook ipo become unlocked

and available for sale sparking fears, of course, of a massive sell-off. here with more is cnbc's karen cho is live in london for us. could we see facebook take another hit today? >> reporter: that's the question. in the past when we've seen these expirations there's been pressure on the stock listed at $38 below $20 where it stands today based on fears of an overhang of the stock because of these types of lockup periods becoming unlocked. the 800 million shares that you're talking about, this is a huge amount, almost the same amount of stock that exists on the market since the ipo. about 920 million stock but if you look at the options trading and this is key because as some traders are putting bets on for the tock to rise after this as some call options around $20 and $21, that's where the activity has been so the suggestions are we may see a bounce in the stock price once we get through the event today but the mark action suggests there might be a better day on wall street after some of the losses we saw yesterday so

purge their payroll again and send most of their talent to the toronto blue jays. they'll freeze this winter. the marlins have agreed to trade jose reyes, josh johnson, mark burly and two other players to the jays in a move that will slash $160 million from the team's payroll. this is just the latest fire sale for the marlins who were known for their slash and burn approach to roster building. all-star slug era mere rest were dealt to the dodgers at the trade deadline. of the nine names on the starting lineup in game one of the 2012 season, look at this, only two of those remain, the entire starting infield has been purged. before last season they spent $191 million to bring a handful of big name players to became as they rebranded and moved into a new stadium. most are with different teams and this latest megadeal may
